Hon Rupert E S Barrington


Hon Rupert Edward Selbourne Barrington was born at Brackley, Northamptonshire on 10 Dec 1877. He was the 3rd son of the 9th Viscount Barrington of Ardglass. He was a trooper in the 34th Company but was commissioned on 1 Dec 1900. At the end of their tour of duty he commanded the 34th Company, which by then consisted of only 12 men, on the return voyage from South Africa in July 1901. He relinquished his commission on 23 Aug 1901 but returned to South Africa as a commissioned officer in the South African Constabulary in Jan 1902. On 10 Sep 1903 he married Mary Ferguson daughter of Lt-Col George Arthur Ferguson of Pitfour, and they lived at 40 Harrington Gardens, London SW. They had a son, born on 13 Dec 1904. The Hon Rupert was awarded the DSO and reached the rank of Lt-Col.
