Middlesex Duke of Cambridge’s Hussars, Yeomanry Cavalry

Captain G E Prideaux-Brune

George Ernest Prideaux-Brune was from Glentorr, Bideford, Devon. He had served as a junior officer in the 6th Inniskilling Dragoons. When the 34th Company was formed he was a lieutenant in command of Section 3, joining on 26 Jan 1900. In May 1900 he briefly served on General Boyes’ staff. He was promoted to Captain in June 1900 but fell sick and had to take leave from 11 Aug to 25 Sep 1900. From 23 Dec 1900 he was ADC to General Boyes. William Corner’s history of the 34th Company in June 1900 tells of his dismay at the bad decisions and disregard for the welfare of the men shown by Captain Brune, although on those occasions he refers to him only as the captain. When Brune did something thoughtful Corner comments ironically: ‘Captain Brune did a graceful thing today. Corporal Ouvry, who is ill, was asked by him to sleep in his tent for the night.’ The rest of the Company, as usual, had to sleep in the open, in freezing conditions.
