Type | Heavy Bomber |
Manufacturer | Short |
Active Service | 1940 - 1944 |
Notes | The Stirling was the RAF's first four engined bomber. Unfortunately, it had a short wingspan which made it difficult to attain altitude during bombing raids. This meant that light as well as heavy flak could take its toll on these planes. They took horrific casualties until they were relegated to glider towers in 1944. |
