Officer in Undress 1855

This image from Gambart’s third lithographed sheet depicts an officer of the RHA in undress pelisse. This was a blue waist-length jacket which had a black fur collar and cuffs, and black braiding. Hussar regiments had pelisses with gold braid to match their dress jackets but the RHA adopted a black braided pelisse around 1806 in the style of the light dragoons at the time. They retained this item of dress but wore it only as a patrol jacket in undress. It was actually discontinued in 1854 and this print may have been out of date at the time of publication, 12 Feb 1855. Also of interest are the gold laced forage cap and the plain black leather sabretache suspended from a waist-belt with black leather straps. His undress trousers have red stripes.
