Officer’s Pillbox Cap c1890

The gold Russia braid pattern decorating the top of the blue cavalry-style forage cap of the Royal Artillery. In the centre is a netted button. The cap was around 3 inches high with a gold lace cap band one inch and five eighths wide. The top design is described in the 1864 Dress Regulations as ‘four rows of tracing braid, plain, with one row figured with 8 loops and an eye between each loop, the whole ornament to measure four and a half inches across.’ The design did not change for the whole period of the cap’s existence as part of the undress uniform.
