Gunnery Instructor & Farrier Major Rank Badges 1864

Illustrations no.34 and 37 in the 1864 Artillery Dress Regulations show the four chevron ranks for an Assistant Instructor in Gunnery and a Farrier Major. Presumably the title of assistant meant that he ranked below a Master Gunner. The gunnery badge is crossed canon barrels with a crown above and a flaming grenade below, all on a red cloth backing. These badges were worn on both sleeves.

The Farrier Major’s badges of rank were worn on both forearms, the gold horseshoe on red cloth being sewn onto the four gold lace chevrons. The gold cord Austrian knot on the cuff has a tracing of gold braid indicating Brigade status.
