Gun Team 1806

This is a detail from an equestrian painting by John Singleton Copley, of the Prince of Wales as a Field Marshal in staff uniform. The figures appear as very small but if this is accurate it represents one of the earliest depictions of the Horse Artillery. The Sub-Division here is drawn by four horses that each have a driver mounted up. The mounted men that follow the gun are probably also members of the Gun Troop. The gunners appear to be wearing busbies or mirlitons but one of the officers on the Prince’s staff, Lt-Col Benjamin Bloomfield, can be seen behind the Prince wearing a Tarleton helmet.
