The Montello

This illustration shows British troops marching to trenches along the River Piave. They occupied the Montello sector at a point where the river is about a mile wide. It was described as ‘a broad flat and dreary expanse of light-coloured gravel through which meanders a narrow stream, ridiculously out of proportion to its watercourse. When flood water came down, however, it became a torrent.’
