Bagamoyo Boma

This photograph shows the boma at Bagamoyo in Tanganyika. Essentially this was the administrative headquarters for the British in the district. Despite its impressive looking Arab architecture, Margaret explains that the interior was in a very poor state of repair indeed. Boma in Swahili means enclosure and is typically used for livestock. However, the Europeans took on this word to describe their compounds which were often typically enclosed.
