Port Louis, 1834


In 1834, Charles Darwin and the Beagle arrived in the Falklands. This was just after the British had taken control of the islands for a second time. He was therefore witness to the nascent colony. This picture shows the tiny settlement of Port Louis that would remain the administrative centre of the Falkland Islands until 1834. You can read what he had to say about his visit here
