Rex Hunt

Rex Hunt became a household name due to his presiding over the governorship at the time of the Falkland Islands' Invasion. He made the official residence into the Royal Marines headquarters and a fierce gunfight occurred as the Argentines tried to seize the Queen's Representative. He ordered the Royal Marines to lay down their arms. Then wearing his full governor's regalia he explained to the Argentine General. "You have landed unlawfully on British territory and I order you to remove yourself and your troops forthwith," The Marines and the Governor had done their job by offering armed resistance and so disputing the rights of the Argentines to claim sovereignty of the islands. He was flown to Montevideo and returned to the UK until the end of the war whereupon he returned to his role of governor until 1985.

He wrote about his time in the Falkland islands in: My Falkland Days
