Sebald van de Weert

Sebald van de Weert was a Dutch sailor who emerged from the Magellan Straits in 1600 and spotted the rocky islands off the coast of South America. For most of the Seventeenth Century, the islands were to be named after him as the 'Sebaldes' and were marked as such on maps from that period.
