Heligoland 1890s


By the time of the handover in 1890, Heligoland was already a reasonably prosperous spa town with a rich fishing heritage. It would soon become a much more militarised settlement as the German Navy in particular took an interest in its strategic location, especially after the formulation and publication of the Tirpitz Plan.
