Britain was given control of the island after the First World War to ensure that the German Fleet conformed to the onerous Treaty of Versailles terms concerning dismantlement of all fortifications. The Royal Navy set up a Board of Commission in the Empress of India Hotel (pictured centre). This picture is actually from before the war showing the construction of the port facilities.
