Empress of India Cartoon

This is a cartoon making light of Disraeli's imperial policies. He had been a big advocate for expanding the Empire and used it as an election issue. Making Queen Victoria had been a quick and cheap way of milking imperial popularity. However, as this cartoon makes clear, his 'forward' imperial ideas made life difficult for his government and he would eventually lose the 1880 election largely due to imperial and foreign affairs set backs.
