Proclamation of the Accession to the Throne of His Majesty King George V at Dublin, 1911

This painting by Henry Harris Brown throws a patriotic spin on the news of a new King in Britain. Some Irish nationalists would've been ambivalent about this announcement. At this time though, there was great optimism that a Home Rule agreement might be forthcoming. It was the outbreak of World War One that pushed it into the long grass.
