This 1788 painting by John Thomas Serres shows King George III in Dublin Bay. Since Henry VIII, the English monarchs had claimed to be the Kings of Ireland also. This painting shows George III visiting his claimed realm aboard his yacht Dorset. Dublin was fast becoming the Second City of Empire. The Dublin parliament was largely under the control of the Protestant Ascendency which was closely aligned with the Royal Family. |
