French Naval Squadron Off Ireland

This 1799 painting by Nicholas Pocock shows why the British were so concerned at the status of Ireland and its likelihood of being used by the French as a springboard to an invasion of Britain itself. The picture shows the French squadron being attacked by a British detachment under the Command of Sir J. B. Warren, Oct. 12th 1798.
