Weihaiwei Harbour

This 1903 photograph shows Royal Naval ships of the China Station in the substantial natural harbour of Weihaiwei. There was rising tensions between Russia, China and Japan at this particular point in time and Britain had recently signed the 1902 Alliance with Japan aimed primarily at Russia. The more northerly treaty port could also be popular with sailors as it tended to be a little cooler in the summer months than China and Hong Kong. Image courtesy of National Archives
