Rev Charles Mead


Rev Charles Mead (1792-1873), born Bristol. Brought up by uncle Rev John Hunt at Wakefield, Yorkshire. Gosport Missionary Academy. Ordained at Chichester 1816. Married his cousin Anne Hunt. LMS Missionary to Travancore 1816-51 (coinciding there with Rev Charles Mault). His first wife died at Penang 1818. Nagercoil 1818. Combaconum 1825. Appointed to Travancore West Division 1827. Neyoor 1828. Plot to assassinate him 1829. UK Leave 1836-37. Neyoor 1838 where 2nd wife died. 3rd wife died 1848. Resigned from LMS after 35 years 1851. Married Louisa Biddulph, the daughter of an Indian poet, and retired to Trivandrum where he became Superintendent of Sircar Press. Died there aged 80. Memorial tablet at Christchurch, Trivandrum 1945. Charles' daughter, Ann Mead, in 1839 married Rev Augustus Caemmerer, for 20 years the SPG missionary at Nazareth
