In addition to history, my other passion is hiking and walking. Most weekends I set out to explore, guided by my unofficial motto: “you don’t have to travel far to be an explorer.” Living in Plymouth means there is inevitably a strong bias towards Westcountry walks, but wherever I go I try to uncover the stories of the local area—its churches, old manor houses, industrial heritage, and more.
For many years I’ve shared these exploits on social media, and friends have often asked me to make my walks available for others to follow. I usually walk with my trusty companion, Rupert the Dog (and before him, Oliver), whose presence adds both joy and continuity to my journeys.
This section is intended to offer inspiration, weaving together landscapes, history, and memory. Along the way, I will also highlight the imperial connections that almost always surface, reminding us how even the most local paths are linked to wider currents of history. You can also find a list of the talks that I give on various historical topics here
You can also follow our adventures on facebook at: Westcountry Walker: Hiking Through History or on Instagram at westcountry_walker
Below is a list of all the walks in no particular order except that the most recent walk is added to the top. If you would prefer, the walks have been organised by county here
