Mombasa Train Station

This picture shows how basic post office facilities were a priority once a rail presence had been laid into the interior of Uganda. Tents were used as temporary post office facilities until construction of more sturdy buildings could be completed. However, these temporary post offices could sometimes last a surprisingly long time. This photograph also highlights the prominence in Indians in helping to provide the manpower for imperial expansion. Picture courtesy of The National Archives
