Helmet, 1792 - 1802

The 20th Jamaica Light Dragoons served in the West Indies from 1792 until their return to Britain in 1802. This rare example of the helmet worn on foreign service was photographed in a private collection. The metal helmet and badge appear as all black but the alligator and lettering were originally silvered, as was the crest on the top. The turban around the base of the helmet is held in place with silver chains, formerly yellow, now darkened with age. The horsehair mane is discoloured but was probably red.
