The crossed axes had been the symbol of the Pioneers since the early years of the 19th century. This badge was worn by both British and Indian officers in the Indian Army’s Pioneer units. In the case of the 32nd and 34th Sikh Pioneers, the dress uniform consisted of scarlet tunics with dark blue facings and gold lace, with these silver badges worn on each side of the collar.
