This painting by Charles Fripp depicts the last moments of Melvill and Coghill on the banks of the Buffalo River. The killers are shown as Zulus, not Natal Africans as has been suggested. There is no sign of the saved Colour which was washed down river. Melvill lies dead, or mortally wounded while Coghill, in a blue patrol jacket stands over him in heroic pose. |
