Exercise

This image shows various soldiers wearing armbands. This was probably to differentiate themselves in an exercise of some sort. In the early stages of a campaign, the commander would want to ensure that the men under his command were capable of performing certain manouevres or follow certain orders. These soldiers may have been asked to play the role of the enemy to see how other units would react tactically.
