Captain Charles Stisted

This officer served in the 39th and 24th Foot before joining the 13th Light Dragoons as a Lieutenant in January 1803. He purchased a Captaincy a year later and transfered to the 3rd Dragoons in 1811. This is a sketch made by Percy Sumner 50 years ago from a photo of a portrait that does not seem to exist any more. Stisted is a Captain here which means this could have been painted any time between 1804 and 1811 but the pelisse on his left shoulder was worn at a time when light dragoon regiments were affecting hussar style clothing. The braid on the pelisse was black silk. When four regiments of light dragoons were converted to hussars between 1805 and 1807 they took on pelisses with gold or silver braid which made the black braided light dragoon pelisses look rather plain so they fell out of use soon after this date. The jacket, however, is richly braided with gold and the buff collar and cuffs have braid showing a blue light. Round his waist is a crimson officer's sash.
