Paymaster Henry Duberly

This is one of several photos taken by Roger Fenton in 1855 of the 8th Hussars. The officer is wearing a fleece coat over his dress uniform but has his undress peaked forage cap. Mrs Duberly achieved more fame than her husband, being one of the few wives allowed to accompany the regiment on campaign. Lt-Col William Forrest, who later became Colonel of the 8th, and the 11th Hussars, wrote about her:

'..an odd woman. The French have dedicated a polka to her as "The Amazone". I do not believe she is guilty of that which many say she is, but of course she has many "Followers" as the servant girls say, and her vanity causes her to encourage them.'
