The Hon Henry Westenra

The regiment were inspected in June 1824 by Major General Lord Edward Somerset at Romford. The report was damning for the newly converted 8th Hussars and singled out the CO, Henry Westenra: 'Lieut-Col Westenra who assumed command on the 9th May is an officer of long-standing in the service, but does not appear to possess much energy or activity.'

This led to Westenra's early retirement on 28th October 1824, five months after he was appointed. This portrait shows him in the uniform of the regiment, painted some time after 1830 when the pelisse was ordered to be red. One can only assume that he was unable to come to terms with his removal from office and continued to wear his regimental uniform whist on half pay.
