Officer c1778

The buff facings look pale in this portrait by Allan Ramsay. The sitter is said to be Captain or Lieutenant Branthwaite although there is no mention of an officer of that name (or Braithwaithe) in the army lists of 1777 to 1787. P W Reynolds wrote about this portrait and thought it dated between 1765 and 1770. The coat is scarlet, facings buff, gilt buttons and loops in threes. Gold epaulette on the left shoulder which was authorised for the dragoons and dragoon guards in 1764. In 1784 the facings were changed to black.
