The Kent East Indiaman

The passengers and crew of the 'Kent' in the foreground desperately try to reach the nearby 'Cambria' before the burning ship blows up. During the operation to lower the boats in heavy seas there was inevitable loss of life. In all 54 soldiers died, along with one woman and 20 children. All their possessions and weapons were lost as well as the regimental Colours. The 'Cambria' was on it's way to Mexico with Cornish miners on board who worked tirelessly to save lives. They were all awarded a medal for their efforts.
