The Royal Irish Regiment

Officer's Belt Plate c1835

This sketch by Percy Sumner is the only known record of this belt plate, the date of which is unclear. He describes it as bright gilt with a silver diamond cut star. The crown and the garter with the motto is in gilt on blue enamel. The harp is also gilt on blue enamel and the scroll of the regimental number in gilt. The Sphinx is in silver and the shamrocks also in silver. In his book on belt plates and buttons, Major Parkyn describes this plate but does not illustrate it. He dates it as 1830-40.
