The Royal Irish Regiment

Sebastopol

The view, looking north, shows the town of Sebastopol with the harbour and docks. The Redan and Malakoff are in the middle distance numbered 5 and 3 respectively. The Quarries fortress (4) was captured earlier. The British artillery position can be seen in the lower left corner, and the French artillery on the right. The Russian defences were greatly enhanced by the efforts of the engineer Lieutenant-Colonel Totleben who directed the rebuilding of the walls and batteries every night following allied bombardment.
