Private Joseph Wallwork


Joseph Wallwork was born in Swinton on 6th Dec 1895 and went to Gallipoli with the 5th Battalion Royal Irish Regiment, landing at Sulva Bay on 7th Aug 1915. He then served in France from 1917 to the end of the war. During his time in the battalion he was bayoneted and captured but survived. He married Betsy Rourke in July 1920 and they had 4 children, one of whom died in infancy. Joseph lived to the age of 53 and died in Manchester on 19th Oct 1949.
