The Battle of Talavera

The Scots Guards, seen here with their Colours, face a mass of French troops. They had already suffered an artillery bombardment but stood firm as the enemy approached, holding their fire until the last moment. The grass was very dry and towards the end of the day it caught fire. The numerous wounded that were left on the field found themselves facing death by fire.
