Thomas Twistleton 1769


Thomas was born c1735 and became the 13th Lord Saye and Sele. In 1767 he married Elizabeth Turner, daughter of Sir Edward Turner of Ambroseden. The couple lived in the family home, Broughton Castle in Oxfordshire which Thomas re-furbished extensively. He reached the rank of Major-General and was appointed Colonel of the 9th Foot in 1782. He held that post until he died in 1788.

Twistleton was, in accordance with the Guards custom of double-ranking, a Captain and Lieutenant-Colonel at the time of this portrait which was painted by Francis Cotes RA. He wears a special pattern 3rd Guards full dress coat. See Dress Coat 1768. . He has a white waistcoat fastened with gilt buttons inscribed Gds 3.
