Colonel W R Birdwood, c1897

He served as a regimental officer for a short time and then as Lord Kitchener's ADC. He is standing next to Kitchener in this photo and wearing ADC's aiguillettes. He later became Field-Marshal Lord Birdwood of Anzac and Totnes GCB, GCSI, GCMG, GCVO, DSO, LLD. and was colonel of the Probyn's Horse in 1924. He was a friend and protege of Probyn himself. Much of what we know of Probyn has been gleaned from letters written by him to Birdwood.
