Abadan


When the oil-men arrived at the Persian Gulf island of Abadan in 1909 to plan their refinery, palm trees and the mud huts of fishermen made up the scene. Witbin four years these had been displaced by the smoke-stacks and cracking-towers of the Anglo-Persian Oil Company.
