Map of Terra Australis, 1616

This map by Petrus Bertius in 1616 is largely a work of fiction. It claims the existence of a huge but as yet undiscovered continent which was called Terra Australis. It was believed to be temperate and would be suitable for colonisation. In this map, Tierra Del Fuego forms a part of the continent. The significance for the Falkland Islands is a clearly marked single island in the correct approximate location of the islands off the coast of South America. It is not named on this map, the Fretum Magalinicum refers to the body of water and not the island.
