George Howard Fanshawe Abadie was from Kent and had joined the 16th Lancers in 1893. After having served in India he was recruited by Major Lugard to join him as the commander of the 1st Battalion of the West African Frontier Force. He was involved in the Kontagora and Bida expeditions. He was appointed as Resident of Zaria in 1903 and also served as Lugard's Chief Political Officer. Sadly within 6 months of the position he was to die of malaria in Kano. The plaque below shows a memorial to him in Canterbury Cathedral. It was actually the death of Captain Abadie that allowed Charles Orr to fill his vacated position as Lugard's Chief Political Officer. His father was General Henry Abadie
