Cayenne Penal Colony

Better known to English speakers as Devil's Island, the Cayenne Penal Colony was opened in 1852 and tended to house political opponents (domestic and colonial) in severe conditions. It was also home to Alfred Dreyfus whilst he had to serve his period of imprisonment. It was closed in 1953. Picture courtesy of Geopolis
