Chief Nderi

Chief Nderi was one of the local leaders who found himself caught between serving the British authorities in the maintenance of Law and Order and representing increased nationalistic demands from the people he led. He was murdered three days after the Emergency was proclaimed. He was accompanied by two Tribal Policemen when he came across a crowd of several hundred at an oathing ceremony organised by Dedan Kimathi. When he ordered them to disperse, because by then oathing had been outlawed by the Government Authorities, they rounded on him and hacked him and his two policemen to death.
