Rev Charles Mault


Rev Charles Mault (1791-1858) of Shropshire. Gosport Missionary Academy: Ordained at St Neots, Huntingdonshire 1818. London Missionary Society (LMS). Married Martha Mead of St Neots 1818. LMS Missionary to Travancore 1819-55 (coinciding there with Rev Charles Mead). Nagercoil 1819, Set up first printing press and later newspaper in Travancore (machinery and operators from Tranquebar, paper from England. Press later taken over by government at Trivandrum). Established first English school. Appointed to Travancore East Division 1827. 'Caste wars' there 1828-30. After 35 years in Travancore, he retired to Stoke, Coventry 1855, where he died in 1858.
