Mutiny by the Tanganyika Army in 1964

John Okello

John Okello led the Revolution on the island of Zanzibar against the Sultan. He was an African who resented the privileged power and status of Arabs on the island. It is unclear how many Arabs died as a result of this uprising, but somewhere between 5,000 - 20,000 is generally accepted. The political instability unleashed by this revolution spilled over onto the mainland of Tanganyika just days later.
