Lord Curzon

George Nathaniel Curzon was Viceroy of India from 1899 until 1905. On his arrival in Bombay, Curzon announced that he had come to India ‘to hold the scales even’ between the different races and religions of the country, and later he could claim accurately that he had ‘never wavered in a strict and inflexible justice between the two races’. He also insisted privately that his first duty was to the people of India and that he would rather resign than sacrifice their interests.
