Travelling by Ship in the British Empire

M.S. Randfontein

Motor Ship Randfontein sailed with the Holland-Africa Line which linked South Africa and Europe. Her sister ship and immediate predecessor, the Klipfontein, actually sank off Mozambique in 1953 demonstrating the element of danger in all ship transportation. Although mercifully, all were rescued in this case. The Randfontein's typical route was Amsterdam, Southampton, Las Palmas, Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, East London, Durban and return, a service she maintained throughout the 1960s.
