The British Empire and its effect on Plymouth

Devonport Dockyard

This fascinating picture of Devonport Dockyard shows the old and new traditions of the Royal at the turn of the Twentieth Century. In the foreground you can see the old Ships-of-the-line that were used as training ships. Behind, you can see the hull of HMS Hibernia being built to counter the rising ambitions of German militarism. The two larger Ships-of-the-line were Impregnable and Circe. The picture was taken from Torpoint and looks across the Hamoaze to Devonport.
