HMS Wilberforce


HMS Wilberforce was an Iron Paddle Steamer launched in 1840 to specifically travel to West Africa to access the shallow coasts and navigate the notorious sandbars and riverways and especially the River Niger. It was constructed partly with money donated by anti-slavery activists. The picture below shows her out in front of her sister ships HMS Albert (centre) and HMS Soudan (left) en route to West Africa near to Holyhead after leaving Liverpool.
