The Jewish Legion and Crownhill Fort

Jewish Legion Staff

It is unclear where this photograph was taken but it does not look like Crownhill Fort. The Jewish Legion did have a recruiting depot in London too at 22, Chenies Street. Of course there were other military structures outside of Crownhill Fort at this time too and of course it could be somewhere completely different again. This photograph comes from Patterson's book entitled With the Judeans in the Palestine Campaign where he labels it as "I HAD AN ABLE AND ENTHUSIASTIC STAFF" and he goes on to explain "I would like to mention here that, although the great majority of all ranks were Jews, yet there were some Christian officers, N.C.O.'s and one or two men. In spite of this there was never the very slightest question between us of either race or religion. All eventually became animated with one spirit—the success, welfare and good name of this Jewish Battalion.""
