The British Empire and its effect on Plymouth

A Family of Inn Keepers

In addition to the Laira Inn, members of the wider Luscombe family ran the nearby Crabtree Inn (Nat Pine and Edith (Luscombe) Berry), The Rising Sun, The Colebrook Inn, The Victoria at Hooe and the Smith's Arms (Westward Inn) at Lee Mill.

This particular photograph was taken outside the Laira Inn and shows Doris as the bride marrying Lesley Flanders from the Victoria Inn at Hooe. Kathleen Berry is the bridesmaid (from Crabtree Inn), the flower girl is Joyce Gaskin daughter of Gert Luscombe and Bert Gaskin. Nat Pine is at the back alongside Edith (Luscombe) Berry (Crabtree Inn). The vicar was perhaps from St. Mary's in Laira. The photograph was taken in 1921.
